These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Alcove mobile application (com.lemniscia.alcove, the "App"), published by LEMNISCIA ("we", "us"). By downloading or using the App you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

The short version

  • Alcove is a personal record-keeping tool, not a bank, not an accountant, and not financial advice.
  • Your data is yours. Records live on your device; you can export them as CSV and delete them at any time.
  • AI capture can be wrong. Every AI result is shown to you for confirmation before it is saved — check it.
  • Alcove Plus renews automatically and is billed by Google Play or the App Store. Cancel any time in your store account; cancelling stops future renewals.
  • Use it lawfully and don't abuse the AI quotas or try to break the service.

1. This agreement

These Terms form a binding agreement between you and LEMNISCIA. They incorporate the Alcove Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data. Your app-store provider's own terms (Google Play or Apple App Store) also apply to your download and any purchase, and nothing here overrides your non-waivable rights under those terms or under consumer law.

2. What Alcove is

Alcove is a personal expense tracker. You record spending by voice, by typing, by scanning a receipt, or by entering it manually; the App organises those records into categories, budgets, insights and reminders. Records are stored on your device and, only if you sign in and enable sync, backed up to our EU-hosted servers.

Alcove does not connect to your bank, initiate or receive payments, hold funds, or provide any regulated financial service. Everything it shows is derived from records you entered or confirmed.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to use Alcove. By using the App you confirm that you meet that requirement and that you are not barred from using it under any applicable law.

4. Accounts and identity

  • You can use Alcove without an account. In that case your records exist only on your device.
  • The first time you use an AI feature, an anonymous ID is created so the free quota can be enforced. It holds no financial records.
  • Signing in with email, Google or Apple is optional and enables backup and multi-device sync after an explicit consent step.
  • You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials and your device secure. The app-lock PIN is stored only on your device — we cannot recover it for you; if you are signed in you can reset it by re-authenticating, and if you are not, the only reset is reinstalling the App, which removes local data.
  • You must give accurate information when signing in and must not use another person's account.

5. Your data and content

The records you create are yours. We claim no ownership of them. You grant us only the limited permission needed to operate the App for you — for example, to store synced records on our servers when you enable sync, and to pass a voice clip, typed text or receipt photo to our AI processor so it can produce a result for you.

You are responsible for your own backups. If you do not enable sync, your records exist only on your device and are lost if the device is lost, reset, or the App is uninstalled. Alcove provides a CSV export so you can keep your own copy. See the Privacy Policy for what is stored where, and the deletion page for how to remove it.

6. AI features and their limits

Voice capture, typed natural-language capture, questions and receipt scanning are powered by machine-learning models operated by a third-party processor. These features:

  • require an internet connection — manual Quick Entry always works offline;
  • can produce incorrect results — a misheard amount, a wrong date, the wrong category;
  • always present the result for your confirmation before it is saved, and you can edit any field first.

You are responsible for checking what you confirm. We do not warrant that AI output is accurate, complete, or fit for any particular purpose.

7. Not financial advice

Alcove's budgets, safe-to-spend figures, insights, streaks and reminders are informational only. They are not financial, investment, tax, accounting or legal advice, and they are not a substitute for your own records or a professional adviser. Do not rely on the App for tax filings, official reporting, or any decision with legal or financial consequences without verifying the underlying figures yourself.

8. Alcove Plus subscriptions

8.1 What Plus includes

Alcove Plus is an optional paid subscription that unlocks features such as unlimited AI captures and questions, higher receipt-scanning limits, additional category budgets, CSV export, all themes and agent personalities, and early renewal warnings. The exact feature set is described in the App at the point of purchase and may change over time (see §11).

8.2 Billing, renewal and price

  • Plus is offered on a monthly or annual basis and renews automatically at the end of each period until cancelled.
  • Payment is charged by Google Play (or the Apple App Store on iOS) to your store account. We never receive your card or bank details.
  • The price shown in the App at purchase, in your local currency and including any applicable tax, is the price that applies. We may change prices for future periods; where required, your store will notify you and ask you to accept before a renewal at the new price.
  • If a free trial is offered, its length is shown on the purchase screen. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, it converts into a paid subscription at the then-current price. Trials are limited to one per account/store account.

8.3 Cancelling

Cancel at any time in your store account — on Android, Google Play → Subscriptions (the App links you there from Nest); on iOS, Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Plus until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the App does not cancel a subscription.

8.4 Refunds and withdrawal

Purchases are processed by your app store, and refunds are handled under that store's refund policy — contact Google Play or Apple support. If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA or UK, you have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal for digital purchases; by starting to use a paid feature immediately you may be asked to agree that the service begins during that period, which can end the withdrawal right once the service is fully performed. Your statutory rights are not affected by anything in these Terms.

8.5 If payment fails or a subscription lapses

If a renewal payment fails, your store may place the subscription in a grace or hold period. During a grace period Plus stays active while the payment is retried. If the subscription ends, Plus features lock but your records are never deleted — you keep full access to your data and to every free feature, and you can export it at any time.

9. Free-tier limits and fair use

Free accounts include a monthly allowance of AI captures, questions and receipt scans, plus a short-term rate limit to prevent abuse. These allowances are enforced on our servers, are shown in the App as you approach them, and may be adjusted as we learn what is sustainable. Automated, bulk or programmatic use of the AI endpoints outside the App is not permitted.

10. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the App for any unlawful purpose, or to store content that is unlawful;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code or model prompts, except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits it;
  • access our servers other than through the App, or attempt to bypass quotas, rate limits, entitlement checks or authentication;
  • upload malware, probe or attack the service, or interfere with other users;
  • resell, sublicense, or commercially redistribute the App or a Plus entitlement;
  • impersonate anyone, or use another person's payment method or account without authority.

11. Availability and changes to the service

We aim to keep Alcove available and working, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. AI features depend on third-party providers and network connectivity and may be temporarily unavailable; when they are, manual entry continues to work offline.

We may add, change or remove features. If we make a change that materially reduces a paid Plus feature you are actively paying for, you may cancel and, where required by law or store policy, seek a pro-rata refund through your store. If we discontinue the App entirely, we will give reasonable notice and ensure you can export your data before service ends.

12. Intellectual property

The App, its design, branding, text and software are owned by LEMNISCIA and protected by intellectual-property law. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App on devices you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial record-keeping. All rights not expressly granted are reserved. This licence does not transfer any ownership to you.

13. Third-party services

Alcove relies on third-party providers for hosting, AI processing, crash diagnostics, sign-in, payments and public exchange-rate data. Their handling of data is described in the Privacy Policy. We are not responsible for the acts, omissions, availability or terms of those providers, and your use of an app store or sign-in provider is governed by that provider's own terms.

14. Disclaimer of warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be error-free, uninterrupted, secure against every threat, or that AI results, calculations, insights or reminders will be accurate or timely.

Nothing in this section limits statutory guarantees that cannot be excluded — in particular, consumers in the EU/EEA and UK retain their legal rights regarding digital content and services.

15. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, LEMNISCIA is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, or loss or corruption of data, arising out of or relating to your use of the App — including losses caused by an inaccurate AI result, a missed reminder, a service outage, or a financial decision you made using the App.

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the App is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for Alcove Plus in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) EUR 50.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

16. Termination

You may stop using Alcove at any time by deleting the App, and you may delete your account and data as described on the deletion page. Remember to cancel any active subscription separately in your store account (§8.3).

We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms — for example by abusing the AI endpoints or attacking the service. Where practical and lawful we will give notice and an opportunity to fix the problem first, and except in cases of serious or repeated abuse we will give you a reasonable opportunity to export your data. Sections 5, 7, 12, 14, 15 and 17 survive termination.

17. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident in the EU/EEA or UK, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts. EU consumers may also use the European Commission's online dispute-resolution platform. We would much rather sort a problem out directly — please email us first.

18. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. The "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version, and material changes will be announced in release notes and, where they affect your rights or a paid subscription, presented in the App before they take effect. Continuing to use Alcove after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms; if you do not accept them, stop using the App and cancel any subscription.
